Everytime you see a neon sign you might notice that it has a unique design. That is the fundamental purpose of a neon light since its early days: either used for interior lighting or for advertising, the solutions had to be usually custom made for that specific purpose and that specific application. Therefore, customization is a very key word for us at sygns as we understand the importance of fulfilling the customer's requirements. And to be able to fulfill those requirements we offer standard variables that you can customize accordingly as well as the possibility of customizing it further with a special request.
We can divide our standard variables into three groups:
- Glass variables
- Mechanical mounting variables
- Electrical mounting variables
In this article we explain all those variables within these groups in order to give you a feeling of what can be customised when creating your sign. .
The glass variables offer the possibility to customize the neon sign itself. In other words, these variables affect everything related to the glass tubes where the neon gas is stored. The variables are:
- Size (Width x Height)
- Content (text or image based)
- Contour (outline vs single line)
And below you find a brief description of their meaning:
Here you are able to specify the dimensions that your sign should have. We usually require that you provide us only one side dimension (either Width or Height) that together with the content reference will determine the other dimensions while keeping the correct proportion. Otherwise, providing Width and Height could lead to stretching your design horizontally or vertically in case the ratio between this Width and Height differs from the ratio between Width and Height of your original content image/file/text.
We offer a wide spectrum of colors that can be seen in our Color Chart here. It's important to mention that some colors are formed differently than other colors, so we classify them into three big groups:
- Clear glass: the glass tubes are transparent. When the neon sign is off you just see a transparent glass tube. When the neon is on you can see the natural gas color shinning from inside.
- Coated glass: the glass tube is internally coated with a special powder that can have different compositions to form different colors. When the neon sign is off you see a white glass tube, regardless of its shinning color. When the neon is on you can see the chosen color as a result from the combination of the gas natural shinning color radiating through the powder.
- Colored glass: the glass tube is not only coated with a special powder inside but the glass itself is also colored. When the neon sign is off you see a glass tube in the same color as the shinning color. When the neon is on you see it shinning in the same color as when it's off.
Even though the glass appearance can be different depending on the coating and glass color, the brightness of all types are equivalent.

The content variable is probably the central point of your customization as it carries the visuals that your neon should actually display (text, image or mixed). It can be determined either by a text input together with a font selection (within our pre-selected fonts) or by a file upload. So if you like one of our fonts you can simply choose it and provide a text content. Otherwise, you should provide us a reference file containing the neon design that you want. Even if your design is text-based only, if you want a different font than the ones we offer, you should submit us a reference file of the text content on that specific font. The same procedure applies when you want a non text-based content (e.g. logo). The image must contain the exact content that you want your neon sign to display.
Here you can specify how the content of your sign should be translated to the neon lines. If you choose Single Line then all traces of your original design will be translated to a single neon line. If you however choose Outline, the neon lines will represent both inner and outter edges of your original design. You can see an example in the following image:
*There might be limitations in terms of Size or Contour depending on the content of the neon.
Mechanical mounting variables
The mechanical mounting variables are the ones that will define all parts that belong to the mechanical structure that holds and/or protects the glass. The following variables can be used for this purpose:
The variables here are ordered because the choice of one of them affects the options you have for the others. Let's understand it better:
The frame type is the central option of the mechanical part as it defines which kind of neon you're making .The main part of the mechanical part is which kind of frame (if any) the neon sign will be mounted on. The neon can be mounted directly on the wall without any support frame as it can also come attached to a background plate and even inside a closed box. When the neon has no frame (and therefore needs to be hanged on the wall) the installation requires holes to be made on the wall at very specific positions where the neon is going to be clipped into. However, when it comes with a brackground plate as a frame, it's normally hanged on the wall like a simple painting frame would (just a few holes, depending on its size, where the frame will be hanged onto). Lastly, if the neon comes in a box, you can either hang it on the wall or simply lay it on any surface. For more information on product installation you read our article here.
Then after choosing the frame style you can define its finishing, which has different options depending on the frame you choose.
The finishing will define how your frame will look like. Therefore, it will only show up as customization option when a frame type is selected. Depending on the type of frame, however, different options will be available:
- Background plate: here you have the option to customize the material, colour and shape of the plate. The shape can always be either Squared or Outlined (follows the neon borders, with a fixed margin):
Besides the plate shape, you can also choose which kind of material, color and texture. The materials can be either Aluminium or Acrylic. For Aluminium plate you can choose it to come either with Black powder coat, White powder coat or Raw aluminum texture. For Acrylic you also can choose White, Black as well as Transparent acrylic. The following table summarizes the different options of shape, color and material available:
- Acrylic box: here there is no further customization options as the acrylic box comes always in transparent acrylic in a squared shape.
When opting for a Glass-only or pre-mounted on a background plate types, you have also the option of adding a front protection. This protection consists on an acrylic plate in front of the neon to avoid direct contact to the glass. This is mostly used on outdoor installations but can also be added for indoors when requested. The shape of this protection plate can be also Squared or Outlined. For Glass-only neon signs you choose between these two options while for signs with a Background plate the protection shape will be the same as the Background plate shape.
Electrical mounting variables
Besides customising the glass and the mechanical parts, you can also modify the appearance of the electrical components. Here, you have the option of customising the color of the electrical transformer as well as its cable colors. The transformer comes with input cables (from the power outlet) and output cables (to the neon glass tubes). The following options are available:
- Black: black transformer case, black input cables and black output cables;
- White: white transformer case, white input cables and translucid white output cables.
